Start by choosing a picture book, chapter book, picture book or chapter book image or excerpt. This can be from one of our course books, from a book I have shared with you, or from a different book entirely.

Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to help you understand how the same book might feel really different to different audiences. It is really not possible to FULLY achieve a perspective other than our own- but it is key to TRY to think about literature from a range of perspectives as we analyze and evaluate it (and especially if we are choosing literature to share with children).

Start by choosing a picture book, chapter book, picture book or chapter book image or excerpt. This can be from one of our course books, from a book I have shared with you, or from a different book entirely.

Then, describe the book or image you are working with as objectively as you can, in about one long paragraph.

Next, offer an analysis of the book from three different possible perspectives. Some examples might be:

Adult, teenager, child

Teacher, student, parent

Black person, Asian person, white person

Girl, boy, nonbinary kid

Person born in the US, recent immigrant, long ago immigrant

A person with a physical disability, a person with an intellectual disability, a person with behavioral challenges

Try to really think about what is great as well as problematic about the book from each perspective- and just what might stand out.

Finally, offer a summarizing paragraph reflecting on what was hard about this exercise and what you learned from it.

Criteria
You will be graded on how astutely, emphatically, and thoughtfully you take on the different perspectives you are considering. You will also be graded on your organization, fidelity to the assignment, and clarity of description. Mechanics will count toward your grade.
