Please provide a brief response to the following. It is meant to add to the discussion.
What is the role of collective bargaining in the education or training industry today?
Collective bargaining is a process of negotiations conducted between employers and employees that define the terms, conditions, and rights of the employer and the employees as the foundation of an employed relationship (MUSE). Collective bargaining and advocacy enable stakeholders to work together so that students, educators, and the community benefit. Collective bargaining works by employer representatives and the employee union exchanging ideas, resolving problems, and coming to an agreement. This includes preparing for bargaining, conducting negotiations, ratifying a contract, resolving contract disputes, and clarifying the contract (NEA, 2020).
What are the pros and cons of the collective bargaining process in the education or training industry today?
There are pros and cons when it comes to making any type of agreement. Cons of the traditional collective bargaining tool are that it was adversarial in nature, pitting employers against employees. The employees would threaten to stop working to receive better wages and benefits, and when applied to education, the school board has limited control over the districts resources. Some pros are that there are new types of collective bargaining that can be used. Win-win bargaining seeks to find solutions that both sides can agree on. Instead of going on strike, expedited bargaining allows employees to continue working as long as progress is being made in the negotiation process. Progressive bargaining allows for more time to take up more issues and principled negotiations allow for each party to reach their goals without having to compromise (Seyfarth, J., 2008). Collective bargaining is a good tool to use because it holds the involved parties accountable for any breaches of the agreement that may occur.
What would you add or change about the approaches and ideas proposed by the class?
There is currently only post on the discussion board with information. When more posts become available, I will update post.
What literature gave you the best insight into the current situation? Why? Use citations and references as needed.
Of the resources that I chose for this post, I think that Human Resources Leadership for Effective Schools gave me the most insight. I have never been part of a union and really have no knowledge of what collective bargaining is. When reading Chapter 12, it was interesting to read about all the different laws in different states, what teachers are/are not allowed to do in certain states, what can and can not be discussed during negotiations, and the things that fall under the scope of the bargaining agreement. There is a lot of time, energy and effort put into creating a collective bargaining agreement. The information on the NEA site was useful as well because it gives direct insight from educators with first-hand knowledge of the issues, and it keeps you updated on all the things they continue to work on.
