Criteria for Oral Pathology Report
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to get you into the library to increase your experience using journal articles and enhance your knowledge. It is designed to emphasize the importance of staying abreast of recent dental journal articles. I want you to use critical thinking to determine how best to treat patients that present with various lesions/diseases.
1. You will be asked to randomly choose your specific topic for your report. *If both students agree, you may change topics with each other.
2. Your topic report needs to include:
a. 3-5 current sources (2015-2019)
b. Reference the sources within the body of the report (use scientific numerical referencing) numbered in the order of appearance in the body of the text, (i.e.: herpes simplex found on the lip1).
c. List sources again in a reference section at the end of the paper in the order they appeared in your text. (This page is not part of your report length of 4-5 pages).
3. Format: 4-5 pages of text with no more than 3 pictures incorporated within your report, not counting cover page or reference section. Number pages at the bottom of the pages.
Font type: Times Roman for main body text
Font size: 12 pt. (title page can be larger if you desire)
Spacing: Double-spaced
4. Cover Sheet (does not count toward required numbered pages) include:
Title of your report
Course name and number (DH21-General & Oral Pathology)
Month and year
Your name
Instructors name:
5. Introduction: This is a brief introduction paragraph that includes a general description of or assigned topic; frequency of occurrence, sector of population or race. End this section with an explanation of what will be covered in your report. (20% of report grade).
6. Body: The body of the report should include the following diagnostic information (35% of grade)
Common location
Histological, radiographic appearance, special diagnostic tests
Clinical presentation
Prognosis
Review the latest research, drug therapies and/or treatments (journals-10%)
End the report with the role of the dental hygienist (25%).
– Dental treatment modifications and additional associated dental or medical complications.
-Spend some quality time here as this is 25% of your final grade.
-Look up articles and journals to help with this portion of your report.
*Critical thinking!
7. Conclusion: A paragraph reiterating key points to take away from your report.
8. Spelling and grammar (10%)
9. Pictures, charts and/or tables are required (1-3 total)
10. You will hand in your entire report to me by Week 15.
11. Oral report: On Week 15 you will be asked to stand up in front of the class to briefly present what topic you chose for your report and key elements that you highlighted within your report. This allows you to share crucial information in regards to your topic with your class so they too can learn from it. Most importantly, this gives you the opportunity to refine your communication skills and confidence. These two elements are something that you will need during your career as a dental hygienist to effectively relate to your patients and staff.
