Discussion Questions for Week One
Remember how the discussion assignments work. You need to respond to one discussion question with an essay of 400-600 words with at least two references. This is due by 11:59 pm (Central Time) on Thursday. By Sunday, you need to submit two responses of at least 75 words to people who, ideally, answered questions other than the one you answered.
Please include the question you are answering at the beginning of the posting. If you notice that several people have answered a particular question, try to answer a different one. The more different discussion topics we have, the better.
Here are the questions for Week One:
1. Chapter 1 presents several forms of social research. Choose on type of research and discuss the specifics of the type, including how a study is established, strengths and limitations, as well as how this research type compares to others.
2. What is Hindsight Bias? How does this social phenomenon play out in everyday life? Provide examples from the research about hindsight bias occurring in every day life. How can we protect ourselves and those around us from not falling victim to the I-Knew-It-All-Along Phenomenon?
3. What are the trade-offs of low versus high self-esteem? Discuss this in relation to the text and available research.
4. Review this Psychological Science (2008) study on self-esteem in teens (http://health.usnews.com/health-news/family-health/brain-and-behavior/articles/2008/11/12/us-teens-brimming-with-self-esteem). What does the study say? Does that seem accurate or not to you? Is your opinion influenced by anything, such as being in high school in 2008? What do the findings say about the accuracy of self-perception and self-esteem?
5. What are the main types of Locus of Control discussed in the text? What are benefits and consequences of these worldviews? How do you view the world? Is that good, bad, or a bit of both? Anything you would change with your perception of locus of control?
6. What is self-serving bias? Discuss studies that highlight the existence of the self-serving bias. Why is this phenomenon present and talk about the positive and negatives of this concept.
