It is time to begin considering your first brief paperthis paper will focus on a learning support center program or service. This week you have read about a variety of programs and services offered by learning support centers. In the next two weeks, we will be reading more about some of them: tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, study skills instruction, academic advising, computer assisted instruction, etc. You may want to explore some learning support center websites for ideas about other programs and services. Select the program or service you would like to write about in your first paper. Your paper should provide some background on the program or serviceits origin and introduction into learning support centers. You should address the purpose(s) of the program or service including the persons it is designed to serve; describe its various components, the way(s) in which it is delivered and the mechanics of it (how it works); identify problems or challenges in its delivery; and describe its effectiveness or success. This paper is basically a literature review on the program or service you select. You will need to search for articles and studies (both print and electronic) about the program or service. You should make use of sources available on the course Moodle site, electronic resources available through the university library and other books, articles and Internet sources. Entire books and dissertations have been written on some of these programs and services, so your brief paper will not be an exhaustive treatise. It should, however, be based on good sources and be well documented. .
To assist you in organizing your paper, please examine the following scoring guide that I will use in evaluating your paper. These should be addressed in the order presented. The items should also be used (with some rewording as needed) as headings in your paper. Papers that do not use these headings will be returned to you for revision. Use of the topical headings will improve your writing and make grading your paper much easier. Again, this assignment will take a great deal of time to complete with quality. Please do not procrastinate and leave it until the last minute.
