Assignment III – PICOT Question and Problem (EP-SLO#3)
This week you will begin to develop you process improvement project proposal. You will identify an existing problem which is influenced by nursing activities. Nursing intervention are independent of medical intervention. The process improvement project should include components of health promotion.
The following are examples of acceptable process improvements, but not an exhaustive list:
1. improving nurse to nurse communication about patients at change of shift
2. preventing calls and injuries
3. preventing pressure ulcers
4. reducing medication errors
5. preventing nosocomial infections
You will discuss your process improvement ideas with the mentor. This assignment is an APA paper which will summarize, synthesize, and cite information obtained from the interview with the mentor. The paper should include the following criteria, as acquired from the interview process:
1. Introduce the problem.
2. What is the problem? Clearly identify the problem you will be addressing.
3. Where did the problem come from? Explain if you identified the problem or if someone else did. You will need to discuss how the problem came to light.
4. Why is the problem important? Tell the reader why this problem needs to be investigated and how it impacts the workplace.
Develop a PICOT question from the identified problem.
First, write out what the P-I-C-O-T each stand for in the following manner:
P = what is the population of interest
I = what intervention is currently being used
C = what intervention to you want to try
O = what outcome are you looking for with the change in intervention
T = what timeframe will you be using to evaluate your outcome
Write your PICOT question. Be careful to write about your population first, and then the current intervention, the intervention you want to try, the outcome you expect, and finally the time frame during which you will try your comparison intervention. Use this format when writing your question. It keeps you on task so that the question contains all of the elements and the elements are correctly organized.
You will write an APA which adheres to the following structure and format:
The cover page must include the following:
Title of the paper
The students name.
Course number and name
Instructors name
Date submitted.
The assignment must have a minimum of three references.
All references must be cited within the text and all in-text citations must have a reference.
The paper must be written in APA format using 7th edition.
The paper must have an introduction and a conclusion.
The paper must have a separate references page formatted in APA style.
The paper must be a minimum of two double-spaced pages, which does not include the cover and reference pages.
