In order to provide a focus for your report you need to identify your audience as policy makers of your chosen country (UK); your report would be expected to conclude with clear recommendations. Make use of headings, diagrams, charts and tables to illustrate relevant issues as well as epidemiological data to support your arguments. Do not exceed the word limit.
It is advised that you cover each of the following sections, use the percentages as a guide for the time/words to dedicate to each element as these are indicative of their relative weighting according to the marking criteria:
an outline of the problem, or of the natural history of the disease, its/their epidemiology and a description of the environmental or behavioural factors that are relevant, including quantitative or other measures of the factors’ prevalence and of their impact on the relevant disease/problems (10%)
an outline of the country and relevant data about the health burden there (10%)
a description of what an optimal control programme, including surveillance, might look like in the country of your choice – in doing this, you should make reference to international recommendations, the experience of other similar countries, the natural history, and what you know about models of prevention and control (30%)
critical review of any existing control programme in the country of choice, identifying in particular any gaps in public health intervention with reference to disease specific and wider issues (25%)
recommendations for public health strategy and policy (25%).
References, tables and appendices should not be included when carrying out a word count. With regard to tables and figures, please be judicious in your use of these and ensure they are fully labelled and accompanied by a commentary & analysis about what the table/figure is illustrating rather than being assumed to be self- evident. Ensure that it is fully integrated into the text that precedes them. This allows the reader to understand why you have included the table/figure and helps the reader know what to focus on when looking at the table/figure.
While references lists are not included in the word count, in-text citations are included.
Additionally, in relation to Empirical Qualitative Research Studies where qualitative data have been collected and analysed, the data emanating from the research and used as quotations to substantiate identified themes, will not be included in the word count. However, please ensure that this data is clearly distinguishable (e.g. in italics) from the accompanying analysis.
