Before you turn it in:
Did you use a primary source? (I won’t grade the paper if it isn’t cited and properly sourced)
Did you use at least two other sources?
Did you Cite EVERY line that contains an idea or fact that you got from those source?
Did you Proofread, checking for grammar, style, and clarity?
Did you call these figures by Washington and Du Bois, not by their given names?
In 5-8 paragraphs (about 700-1000 words):
Describe and evaluate the ideas of Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois. What factors in their lives shaped their views on race relations? What social forces were Washington and Du Bois responding to? What were the merits of each of their arguments? What parallels do you see today? Who do you agree with?
Explore their youth & education, that will help you understand their positions.
Use two secondary sources (I will supply you the Atlanta Compromise Speech and a section from Souls of Black Folk) and one outside primary source (do not cite Wikipedia, it is often inaccurate. Use it as a platform to find more reliable sources). Use footnotes and create a bibliography (can be on same pages as essay) in Chicago Style.
Proofread your paper
PLEASE don’t refer to these men by just their given names in the paper. In formal essays subjects are referred to by their surname unless there are multiple subjects from the same family under discussion.

ou need at least three references. At least one of those must be a primary source, something about the topic published at the time of the event or a first hand account by someone who was a part of the event.
EVERY sentence that contains a fact or idea that aren’t yours must have a citation at the end of that sentence. It won’t look pretty, but it is expected in academic writing. That’s why I have you all using footnotes, not in-text citations, so it doesn’t break up the flow as much. Use Superscript numbers, I will show you how if you want.
