Write a two-page narrative essay or an autobiographical story about a moment from your literacy history.

Whats the assignment?

Write a two-page narrative essay or an autobiographical story about a moment from your literacy history.

Your aim is to draw out the role literacy sponsorship has played in your life. Remember that literacy sponsors can be people, institutions, cultural traditions, technologies–the definition can be quite broad. The key thing is that these people or forces motivated you to learn to read, write, or communicate in new ways. Of course, as Debora Brandt describes, these influences arent always pleasant or positive, sometimes sponsors get in your way.

As you plan your narrative, I want you to include both the micro and macro perspectives. Include an introductory overview which establishes context for your more specific narrative. After establishing that broad context, move into a much more specific portion of the narrative. Try to be as specific and small as possible in terms of the ground you cover. Try to avoid covering large periods of time, like an entire school year or your entire childhood (that can be offered in the macro or broad portion). From this micro lens, choose a very small moment from your past that shows exactly how a specific sponsor motivated (or forced) you to learn a new way to read, write, or communicate.

One objective for this narrative should be to immerse your audience in the moment you are presenting. Be sure to use lots of sensory details: sounds in the room, music in the air, objects within your view, smells that evoke the space. Your audience for this piece is your classmates, so seek out a writing voice that will catch their attention.

The second objective of this project–in addition to telling your story– is to help us better understand something about Brandts notion of Literacy Sponsorship. Use a concept from her work as the title of your narrative, one which will provide a thinking point for what will follow in your writing. Also, work on including her ideas in your narrative, crediting her with a signal phrase and only using paraphrased or quoted material if youre sure you know how to use MLA documentation well (well study MLA documentation more thoroughly before I require yall to use them).

How do I know its complete?

(These are the questions I will ask when I evaluate your finished narrative)

Does your narrative have a title that is derived from Debora Brandts essay Sponsors of Literacy?
Does your narrative provide a broad overview to start for context for your specific (micro) story?
Does your narrative then focus on a small, specific moment from your history (for instance a single day)?
Does your narrative clearly portray a moment of literacy sponsorship?
Does your narrative turn a literacy moment into an engaging story, including elements like sensory description, dialogue, and a source of dramatic tension?
Does your post make use of appropriate category labels and keyword tags?
