Do you believe you made your goals attainable? How could you use the SMART goal approach to ensure you meet these goals?

THIS IS MY POST:
Slomka et al. (2008, p. 28) by citing the Association of Schools of Public Health, define professionalism as an ability to demonstrate ethical choices, values, and practices in decision-making and dedicate oneself to promoting personal and career values as well as continuously develop interdisciplinary competencies. Speaking about professionalism in public health, an important thing to consider is that empowering competencies for professionalism in the field of public health goes hand in hand with moral principles and ethics of public health where population-based approaches to improving health equity and literacy are at the center of attention. Importantly, value-laden practices in the field of public health must be grounded on the core ethical principles. Consequently, since ethical values lay the ground for professionalism in public health, public health decision-makers and public health professionals should use clinical ethics concepts to make moral decisions, which would promote the interests of the general public (Slomka et al., 2008).

Taking that into consideration, my short-term goals that will help me to strengthen and improve my professional skills are as follows.

– To define a set of my personal and career ethical values and take a step toward bringing them to life.

– To improve my weaknesses identified with the Covey 4 cores of credibility tool. They are as follows: to improve my motive awareness so that I could be sure that Im doing the right things for the right reasons, to learn how to look out not only for my own interests, but take a genuine interest in others, and to work on building trust with others.

– To gain the first work experience in the field of public health. I do feel like my education has prepared me for my first job in the field of public health as well as start a Master of Studies in Law program.

It is important to note that when I set out to achieve a goal, I do just about whatever it takes to achieve the desired outcome. I do believe that professionalism in public health involves a commitment to lifelong learning and professional service. With this in mind, my long-term goals that will help me strengthen and improve my professional skills are as follows.

– To achieve success in advocating for health education through organizing and implementing activities that would help to overcome barriers to improving public healthcare literacy. I feel that the knowledge and skills, which I acquired and developed during the framework of this program, would help me to take my first steps toward advocating for health education.

– To manage a public health program to expand my practical experience. I would like to emphasize that to successfully manage a public health program I will need to consciously increase my knowledge and skills this program has equipped me with.

– To create and open my own hospital network and/or system where I can build public health and hospital partnerships.

THIS IS THE STUDENT RESPOND TO MY POST:

Tammy, great job on your discussion post this week. It is important to perform self-assessments as it allows for us to be aware of our strengths and weaknesses. Understanding our weaknesses enables us to continually improve while understanding our strengths can aid us in building our team. When it comes to professionalism this is no different. I think you did a great job explaining the value of a professional attitude and your professional strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, I really like how you laid out your short term versus long term goals related to the field of public health. Personally, I focused more on short term goals as most of my weaknesses regard breaking bad habits like procrastination. How did taking the self-assessment to aid you in determining your short and long-term professional goals? Do you believe you made your goals attainable? How could you use the SMART goal approach to ensure you meet these goals?
