Observation and Recording

Observation and Recording Assignment
For this assignment you will observe a behaviour for 5 days. You will first need to choose an individual to observe- this can be a classmate (with permission) or T.V./radio personality, a pet- but should be someone you see daily- and a behaviour to observe. You will describe the behaviour in observable and measurable terms and develop a plan to measure it (who, what, where, when, how). After completing the plan, you will chart the results using a graph.
Students are to use one of the closed observation systems for this assignment. A radio or television personality is an acceptable subject (e.g. count the number of times the news anchor says the in 10 minutes or the percentage of time a radio co- host laughs or the number of times Homer Simpson says Doh in an episode). If a television program is used, it should be watched live rather than on videotape/DVD because we typically dont have the option of rewinding an observation to view it again. A student checklist and rubric are provided for this assignment.
This assessment evaluates the following: Outcomes 3.0- Differentiate and identify subjective, objective, and conclusive statements. 3.1- Use systematic procedures for observing and recording behaviour. 3.2- Chart results of observations using graphs.
Value: 30 marks
What follows on the next few pages is a checklist for the assignment and rubric.
