Goals/Purposes:
For students to connect the course concepts and discussions with real-life examples;
For students to deepen their perception of what an op-ed is;
For students to get familiar with local and regional media outlets.
Instructions:
Find two local or regional media outlets local outlets are based in New York City; regional outlets are based in the Tri-State Region (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut). Outlets based in New York but with a national scope and/or consumed worldwide (such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal) should not be chosen.
Within each outlet, find two articles related to social inequality.
Write a review of each outlet containing the following information:
Name of the media outlet and where it is based (city and state).
The type of audience targeted by the publication (if you do not find explicit information about it in the publication itself, try to guess it by checking the mission statement, headlines, and other clues) write as much as you can figure out about the intended audience.
Headline and summary of each article you found interesting or relevant from a social inequality perspective (note: you will present four articles in total).
Explanation of how/why the articles you selected express the course concepts and discussions please elaborate on your explanation and provide enough information about the connections between each article and the course.
Comment on why you selected the articles you did please elaborate on your comment and provide details.
Minimum requirements:
Each review should be one full page to one and a half double-spaced pages in length;
You should deliver both reviews in one single document (total of three pages);
The review should be original (i.e., written by you in your own words); plagiarism and cheating are unacceptable.
The review should cover all the numbered items outlined in the instructions; you can write on bullets or similar.
Please deliver a polished piece (i.e., no typos, no grammar or spelling errors, etc.). Do not cheat or plagiarize.
