Influencers of the Axial Age

Dr. Karl Jaspers (1883-1969) argued that ancient civilizations underwent a pivotal change between the 8th and 3rd centuries, BCE. This period, he pointed out, saw new ways of thinking and significant cultural and societal development arise in China, the Greco-Roman world, India, and Persia in similar ways without direct cultural contact between these civilizations. These new ways of viewing and understanding the world became the foundations for what eventually became modern civilizations.

Assignment: Select two innovators or movements from different regions from the list below. In 5-7 pages, explain the nature of your selections (define them thoroughly), the importance of your selections to historical development of the society from which it/they emerged, as well as outside of their immediate society over time. In addition, explain how the two items you selected compare and contrast to each other, and how without direct input from each other could have influenced each other. This will require a consideration of trade, technological advancements, and other interactions between various societies. It will also require you to fully explain the core concepts/facts of your selection and make an argument about its influence in history. This is an argumentative paper, and therefore requires a thesis statement.
