Mill’s Utilitarianism

1) Exposition/Explanation of the moral theory that you have chosen. Be sure to identify and clearly explain the most important components of the theory, such that a person who has never heard of this theory would be able to understand the basics of that theory based on reading your essay.

2) Criticisms/Objections of the chosen theory. During our discussions, we covered several formal objections to Utilitarianism and Virtue Ethics, and you are free to use these in your essay. We didn’t cover any formal objections to Kant’s theory or the ethics of care during class, so choosing one of these two options will require a bit of research on your own and of course I am willing to provide some guidance on this.

3) Presentation of personal view. In this section you should explain and defend your position on the theory that you have chosen. Do you think the theory is totally or even partially correct? Be sure to explain your position in detail, ideally in relation to the most important objection that you described in the previous section. (Historically, students tend to spend far less time on this section than the others. You should try to avoid this mistake! If you aren’t able to type out one full page of your thoughts on why the theory is right or wrong, or what you think we can learn from the theory, then you likely don’t have a deep enough understanding of it.)
