Licensing Discussion
Please post your introduction
Copyright, Licensing and Fair Use
Copyright, Licensing and Fair Use can be challenging topics because there contain a number of nuances and gray areas. This is our opportunity to discuss some of these nuances or complications.
Your original post
Ask a question about licensing. This could be something you find confusing, an unclear nuance, or a point of debate you would like to address. Please ask questions that lead to discussions rather than ones that have a single right answer. Some examples of questions are below; these are meant to help you formulate your own question.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of selecting an NC license?
What are some examples of educators misusing fair use due to a misunderstanding of the rules?
How can I help my colleagues understand how their choice of CC license affects downstream users?
There are many similar questions. What question do you have?
Your response
Respond to at least 2 other participants. In addition to your thoughts on the matter, include at least one citation or source of information.

I do agree that Copyright, Licensing and Fair Use can be challenging topics due to the number of nuances and gray areas, however my question is how can you decide what the best Creative Commons license is for the type of work you are creating? I know there is many but Is there certain criteria where you would use one license over another or is it just the authors preference?
Hi Andrea,
From what I’ve learned thus far from the modules, the license you choose is dependent on whether you want your work adapted or used for commercial use. I think it depends if you are remxing other people’s work or if its all orginial content it is up to the author to determine how to use it.

Hi Everyone,
My question is about how open licensing and Creative Commons licensing works on Youtube. I and my colleagues have used Youtube videos on numerous occasions to add engaging supplemental instruction to our courses. Having a newfound knowledge of copyright and fair use, I would like to explore how Youtube fits into those areas.
The way this question appeared to me was when I was selecting a video to show my students different stories and perspectives on self-management in college. For context, I am TA for a personal growth course at Miramar College and I plan a portion of our class activities each week. As I was selecting the video, there was no sign of a Copyright license or Creative Commons license to help me in my selection of material. Upon reading a 2012 article (Links to an external site.) from Creative Commons, I found out that four million CC-licensed videos are published/housed on Youtube.
Ever since I discovered Youtube as a kid, I have spent much time watching DIY videos, tutorials for makeup and dance as well as music videos and parodies, all with the impression that Youtube allowed for users to share and create content freely and I have certainly shared videos on social media freely without any thought of Copyright. What I am wondering now, is how to find out if a Youtube video is published with Copyright or a Creative Commons license. As a teacher, I would love to continue to use Youtube as it offers so many creative instructional contents.
I invite your expertise and knowledge in this exploration.
