Purpose
The introduction of a research proposal reviews the scientific literature relevant to the proposed research. For that reason, the introduction is called a “literature review.”
Why is it important to review the scientific literature before proposing new research? Because, to advance our scientific understanding, it is important that new research builds on prior discoveries. Don’t forget, the purpose of your literature review is to convince funders to give you money to do your research! If you can’t demonstrate that your research helps to advance science, your proposal won’t be successful.
Your assignment is to write the literature review for your research proposal.
Instructions
Use the scientific literature to tell the story about what is already known about your chosen topic. Your literature review should be approximately 8-10 pages.
Organization
DO NOT simply summarize your references one by one.
Your literature review should be organized around subtopics relating to your research topic. For example, for research focusing on how stream macroinvertebrate communities respond to salinization, you might have subsections in your introduction for: 1) how and why streams are becoming saltier, 2) how salt moves through freshwater systems, 3) what is known about how stream ecosystems respond to salinization generally, 4) general characteristics of stream macroinvertebrate communities, and 5) what is known about how stream macroinvertebrate communities respond to salinization.
Develop and present a research question in the context of this scientific literature. Point out weaknesses in past research that your project proposes to address.
Citing references
Provide references for articles cited in your proposal. You should include at least 10 peer-reviewed papers. Articles should be cited in the text by name and year (Traister, 2007) and then referenced in the Cited References section as follows:
Traister, E. M. (2007). How to cite references. Journal of Higher Education, (101), 12-34.
If there are two authors, cite in the text (Traister & Shustack, 2007) and reference as follows:
