The period of the late 19th Century and early 20th Century in Latin American is often referred to as the second conquest. During this period, Latin American countries became further entwined in the world economy, lead to an agro-industrial boom that both created much wealth and displaced millions of people from rural communities. Social dislocation led to the mass migration of indigenous peoples and Afro-Latin Americans to urban areas, thus provoking fear among the elites that migrants would cause disorder, social and cultural transgressions, and possibly even revolutionary uprisings that could destabilize the hegemony of the ruling classes.
Drawing on Patricia Galvos Industrial Park and readings from weeks 8 and 10, discuss 4 major points that characterize the period between 1880-1930. Your paper should be a total of 3-4 double-spaced pages and include an introduction and thesis (that characterizes the period and discusses the extent to which it leads to greater freedom for working men and women) and then 4 paragraphs (one for each of your points) with specific examples to illustrate your points. Among the points that you might consider are: economic dislocation and its impact on communities, the working classes, the role of elites, how it shapes gender, social movements, the role of the government in creating social programs, etc.

The body of your essay should be devoted to proving your thesis. Topic sentences should guide the reader through the argument and evidence from the course material should be selectively used to illustrate your point. The evidence that you use should be well-selected and relate directly to your point. You should also draw from the various course materials and not rely just on one source.
DO NOT DIRECTLY QUOTE. Use specific examples and paraphrase whenever possible and then cite the source that you took it from. You can use either footnotes or parenthetical references, just be consistent.
