What is the relation between rural poverty, access to land and agricultural technologies? How does the diversification of livelihoods improve the conditions faced by rural populations?

Although the share of rural populations varies greatly between regions of the world and individual nations, a significant share of the population of developing nations lives in the rural areas, where employment opportunities and infrastructure are usually in short supply. Rural incomes generally are much lower than incomes in urban centers, and they tend to be dependent on agricultural activities and therefore directly impacted by climatic events that affect crops. A marked tendency of rural areas in developing nations has been migration to urban centers in search of better opportunities, and a diversification, when possible, of the sources of household income. When rural households remain tied to agriculture, land tenancy, area of land, quality of soil, and rainfall patterns are key determinants of the well-being of their members.
