Suggestions for teaching/dealing with language variation in class / secondary school – In other words how to go about teaching/dealing with language variation in class?The following issues should (at least) be addressed:- teach register- The SPEAKING module which could be used to help students understand how they shift their own styles of communication Eg a speech that students have to give to the class.- Differentiate between register and variety- Create awareness that language variation sets adds colour/mood to eg books, for example Huckleberry Finn- Use materials with different varieties of English (AAVE / Indian English, Austrailian, South African English, etc.)- Guide students to think about language change.- Incorporate the students non-standardized use of English in activities/assignments See Hudley & Malllison for further information.
