Introduction to Aging (HD 200):
What is it like to age as a person of color in the United States? What if you have a disability or injury that impacts your mobility or cognition? Is the experience different if you are an aging immigrant who started life early in the United States different than a recent older immigrant integrating into a new society? Do veterans experience greater incidence of homelessness as they age? This activity will require you to look at the world through the prism of an older adult who is a member of a minority group. What’s it like? What do you need? Is our society supporting your needs, or leaving you out? Tell me the story, tell me the truth.
Objectives: To help students understand the breadth of diversity among the aging population in the United States, the challenges facing unique populations, and the policies that impact the quality of life, and share findings with classmates in a comprehensive and engaging discussion and multimedia format.
Choose one minority group: African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian, or Latino (or a specific group that holds particular interest to you) and spend time researching the special needs, challenges, or other information that you deem important. At a minimum, explore the the following information for the 65+ minority group:
-health
-mental health
-family structure/family support system
-education
-employment
-income
-service needs and accessibility
In your post, which can be written a mini-research paper, or created a video, Discuss what effects being a minority older adult (+65 years old); your choice from the four ethnic minorities listed above, has in todays society based on the information you have collected on the above-listed details. Initial response to be based on statistics gathered on economic, education, mental and physical health etc. of a person 65+.
Imagine that you are the ethnic minority you selected; describe these details from that perspective. How do you access needed services, what is your health status, income, education attainment etc.; describe any difficulties, and/or joys you experience. Be specific. Reference your resources in the body of the paper or video response.
