Food Documentary Analysis

Purpose:In todays world, misinformation is everywhere. Once a source has gained popularity, it is hard to fact-check and to correct errors. The goal of this assignment is for you to demonstrate yourself as a critical consumer of popular media presentations of food, eating, and nutrition by evaluating the accuracy of claims made in a popular food documentary. Skills and Knowledge:Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to: Summarize a popular documentary presentation on food and nutrition Critically evaluate claims made in popular media Reflect on sources of information and food practices Task:Choose one the food documentaries listed on Canvas. Each of these documentaries has been produced within the past decade and thus should be presenting relatively recent information on their topic. Some of these documentaries are available online for free or through your library. Others require a subscription to a service such as Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime. Please select a documentary that interests you and to which you have full access. Each documentary is about 1.5-2 hours long so make sure you are viewing the full documentary and not a preview. For the assignment, you need to watch the documentary in its entirety. Then, using the required template, you should provide your own summary and an evaluation of the documentary. For the evaluation of the documentary, you need to identify four claims that are made in the documentary and then verify the accuracy of those claims. These claims should be core to the film. To verify the accuracy of the claims, you need to rely on academic, peer-reviewed sources. Please see the General Guidelines for Completing Writing Assignments for instructions on identifying peer-reviewed sources. You can also use on other reliable sources (e.g. government reports, articles from well-established newspapers, University websites, etc.) but you need to verify the accuracy of any claims made there as well (e.g. if an article on www.asu.edu cites research done by a faculty member, go look at the actual published research rather than relying on the summary in the article). Make sure that you are focusing on recent research (i.e. articles published within the last decade) as our knowledge is constantly changing. By comparing research within the last decade to documentaries released in the last decade, you are comparing contemporaneous information. At least three different academic sources need to be used in this assignment. This means that the same academic source could be used to fact-check multiple claims, if appropriate. Each individual claim though needs to include a relevant academic citation. Finally, you will need to provide a reflection on this assignment and the coursework completed thus far.
