This is the second of two Performance Reviews you will write for THEA 101N. It is a theatre review for: Jack & (link) (Kaneza Schaal and Cornell Alston) Remember the guidelines for writing a performance review from the Week 9 presentation (link). 1.Introduce the piece- by describing one memorable moment. 2.Express the beginning, middle, and end of the piece. (For a play, this is commonly called the statement of dramatic action.) 3.Name one of the things the performance accomplishes. 4.How do the artists choices (stage languages) contribute to this? (Talk about at least three). 5.What does this performance mean? What does it make you think? Your review should be 250-300 words. Start by taking notes. Make a sheet of headings for all of the stage languages from the Week 9 semiotics presentation (link): Music, Costume, Movement, etc., and then list details as you watch the performance. A good way to begin writing is to answer all of the questions above, but turn those answers into a review that flows from thought to thought with transitions. Somewhere in your review, describe one moment in great detail, a moment that could stand in for the whole piece. If something is unfamiliar, make every attempt to describe it (rather than calling it “weird” or “odd” or “abstract”). This assignment asks you for your response to the piece. It is not necessary to consult reviews of the piece by other writers. As with any academic writing, if you must or do consult outside sources, quote and cite them properly. Students who plagiarize will fail the assignment and will be referred to academic integrity, where the offense will be recorded and, if necessary, adjudicated.
