There are health inequity and disparities in the health care services that exist among different populations. The National CLAS Standards establish a blueprint for health and health care organizations to follow to advance health equity, improve quality of services, and eliminate health care disparities (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, n.d.). Many people cannot write or speak the English language. The City of Detroit is a multiracial diverse city. Many people speak English and other languages like Spanish, Arabic, Tagalog, Chines, etc. Some of the residents of the city can not speak or write in the English language. The residents that cannot speak or write in the English language need communication and language assistance. Providing easy-to-understand print and multimedia materials and signage in the languages commonly used by the populations in the service area is one of the standards that will help to advance health equity (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, n.d.).
The Institute for Population Health (IPH) Detroit, Detroit, Michigan, provides childhood immunization and COVID-19 testing to the residents of Detroit, Michigan (Institute for Population Health, 2020). The students developed childhood immunization and COVID-19 testing messages for the IPH website. IPH has contacted the Global Interpreters to assist in transcribing the health message to Spanish and Arabic languages. The organization also uses trained language interpreters to help people that need communication and language assistance. Providing health messages that are culturally and linguistically appropriate for the population will increase knowledge, awareness, skill, and behavior change that leads to the achievement of the desired outcomes of improving population health, advancing equity, and social justice.
