We are currently reading Girl, Woman, Other, the Booker Prize winning novel by Bernardine Evaristo. The novel mainly takes places in Great Britain, though parts of the story unfold in Africa, the Caribbean and North America. It tells the story of several Black British women with diverse life experiences. For this research project, I would like you to think about some aspect of this novel that you would like to better understand. Perhaps you would like to know more about the colonial history that led to so many people of African ancestry living in the Great Britain today. Maybe you want to better understand the intersectional identity of a character like Amma, who is black, female, and gay. Maybe you would like to have some psychological insight into the behaviors and motivations of some of these characters. Perhaps you would like to know more about the authors life experience. Is it reflected somehow in the story? In week 7, I am giving you a brief lecture on different theoretical approaches to the analysis of literature. Maybe researching more about some of these theories might be a way of approaching this assignment. How can these theories be applied to Evaristos novel? You get to decide yourself what you would like to research. First, you are going to formulate a research question. You are going write a proposal (or at least 300 words) in which you explain what kind of research you would like to do and how you think that research will help you better understand this novel. Then you are going to do some research using the Chabot librarys databases. You must find at least four sources (articles or books) that help you answer your research question. At least two of them must be from the Chabot library. You will write up your sources in an annotated bibliography. The term annotated bibliography tends to frighten students, but its actually a simple and easy type of paper to write: You will make an MLA works cited list of your sources, and you will follow each works cited page entry with a summary of the source. The summary should be written in your own words! Do not simply copy sentences from your source. (Plagiarism is just as unacceptable in this kind of writing as in any other, and if you plagiarize, you will get a zero.) Each summary should be at least 200 words. I am placing a sample annotated bibliography in this weeks module. Use this assignment to submit the final draft of your annotated bibliography.
