Evaluation Essay lecture and assignment

Lecture

The basic tool of evaluation is criteria. Before you start evaluating your professor, your coworker, a movie, a friend, a course, etc., you need to write down criteria for your evaluation or judgement.

A fair evaluation need not be all positive or all negative; it can include both strengths and weaknesses.

Once you lay down your criteria for your judgement, you need to provide reasons and evidence to convince your readers or audience.

If you want to buy a car, you need to jot down a couple of criteria to pick one car out of millions in the market.

For example, you may focus on the model, the price, gas consumption per mile, looks, color, durability, etc. This will help you to organize your body paragraphs. You may write one paragraph for one or two criteria, and so on.

If you want to evaluate a movie that you watched, some of the criteria could be the main message or theme, picture quality, characterization, setting, the plot, etc. Then you can write one paragraph for each criteria.

Most of the time evaluating someone or something may involve comparing and contrasting.

In your introduction, give your reader an overall introduction to help your reader understand what you are talking about.

The last sentence of your introduction should be your thesis statement. The thesis is best if it tells us the criteria for your evaluation or judgement.

For example: The new Toyota 4Runner emerged as the best car of 2020 because of its comfort, power, and durability.

This thesis tells as that there are 3 body paragraphs; one for comfort, next paragraph for power, and a 3rd body paragraph for durability. You will have an introduction and a conclusion paragraphs which makes it at least a 5 paragraph essay.
