Unethical?

Based on the situation Lorraine is in, I know that giving drugs, no matter if they are or are not harmless, to a patient who has not yet been diagnosed with an illness that requires that specific drug is an unethical act. I do not believe that Lorraine providing a free sample to Teresa would be wrong IF and only if the she went in for the diagnosis and was “okay-ed” by the doctor to have that specific prescription. After all, she could have an allergic reaction to it, or prescription may damage her another way. Biblically, we are to obey those who God has allowed to govern over us. Be it our code of ethics that our administrative team has put in place, we must obey in full, no matter if it seems unethical in our own moral beliefs and standards, we have to uphold, in the workplace, our workplaces ethics and code.

One website I looked at had a “for” and an “against” side looking at an overview of both trains of thought. I agree more with the against side. The patient could misuse the drug, or the drug could be “expired and is easily overlooked.”

Aside from an article, let us look at the main man of all the ethics and code. The AMA. They say, ” The use of drug samples for personal or family use is permissible as long as these practices do not interfere with patient access to drug samples. It would not be acceptable for non-retired physicians to request free pharmaceuticals for personal use or use by family members.”

I still am leaning more to the against side, however, I do not necessarily see a problem with it. My only concern, as the AMA stated, is if the patient has direct access to the drugs. If not, and they have already been diagnosed and granted permission to take a sample, then and only then are they allowed the samples via the physician or nurse.
