This assignment requires you read the entire book Where Am I Eating? and take notes as you read it. Unlike a summary or book review, a book analysis gives a description, critical analysis, and an evaluation of the book as well as a connection with the course concepts (you must connect it with at least 5 key concepts by giving the definition and then an explanation on how these connect. Your analysis should also comment on the quality, meaning, and significance of a book (not a summary nor a retelling). Your analysis should be concise and focus on the book’s purpose, content, and authority. A critical book review is not a book report or a summary. It is a reaction paper in which strengths and weaknesses of the material are analyzed. It should include a statement of what the author has tried to do, evaluates how well (in the opinion of the reviewer) the author has succeeded, and presents evidence to support this evaluation. You must include a review of other sources of information (including Ken Guests book as main source of comparison) about the topics covered in the book, check facts, statistics and other statements made that seem unusual or of interest to you. You need to develop some overall understanding of the topic to best describe the book itself.
READ AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS THOROUGHLY, ESPECIALLY BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR PAPER.
Read the entire book and take notes.
Read at least two academic sources to supplement your analysis (Guest can be one). You will find articles under the Course Content section. These are suggested articles but you can find your own as long as they are academic (peer-reviewed). You must include or incorporate these articles in your final paper.
Throughout the semester, make connections between the two books to incorporate in your paper. You must include at least 5 key concepts in your paper. (i.e. Anthropology according to Guest (2018, p.12) is defined as the study of humans and Timmerman having training in anthropology sets out to do ethnographic field work using an emic perspective (emic perspective is defined by Guest as(p. 28) and it centers the methodology used by Timmerman in that) Guest also talks about the Ivory Coast and chocolate (pp.295-297)but unlike Timmerman, Guest argues that chocolate as an industryetc.
Your final report should be A MINIMUM OF 3 pages and a maximum of 5 pages long, typed, double-spaced, 12 size font and 1inch margins. Be sure to proof read as one point will be deducted for every grammatical/spelling error in your paper. You should seek the help of the Tutoring or Writing Center. You can also submit your paper early for me to give you feedback before the deadline (I will only be able to proof read it once during the semester and it must be a final draft and at least a week before the due date). The essay should be structured in the following manner and address ALL the points in each section:
Introduction-. Give a general overview of the book, what are the main points Timmerman tries to make? What is his positionality & authority? What theoretical framework(s) is he using? What is his methodology? How effective is he in making his points? How well documented are his claims?
Analysis- Based on the questions above, analyze 3-5 main ideas Timmerman makes in his book AND connect them to concepts discussed in Guests book. I would suggest broad terms like Globalization & its key dynamics (p.19), Colonization & Economic inequity (pp.295-297), Class & theories (p.267), etc. Each idea must be clearly discussed in a separate paragraph and you must identify in bold the key concept and give Guests definition as well a proper citation.
Conclusion- give your critique of the book. What are the strengths and weaknesses? Did you find different facts in the outside academic sources you used to compare the content? Did you like the book? Why or why not? What did you learn from it? How can you apply it to your life?
