Assignment Prompt

Mixed methods combine both quantitative and qualitative methods to take advantage of the strengths of each. Review this video that captures how researchers develop mixed methods studies (transcript available at link): https://methods.sagepub.com/video/srmpromo/PDuI8U/developing-mixed-methods-research?seq=1

For the assignment, you will create a chart featuring one qualitative research question and one quantitative research question framed around an educational topic or question that interests you. Explain the types of data you would gather to answer each question. Feel free to use any format you like for this assignment. See the example below for one option of how you can formulate the assignment:

EXAMPLE : Topic – Student Persistence in Freshman Seminar Classes

Qualitative Question – What are the perceptions of students regarding the benefits of Freshman Seminar Classes in teaching foundational college skills?

Data- For this question, I would interview students to gather their ideas about how well they believe the Freshman Seminar Classes prepared them for the skills they need in college. The data would be narratives of their answers to the interview questions.

Quantitative Question – What is the rate of first to third term persistence for students who complete Freshman Seminar Classes?

Data – For this question, I would gather school data showing the numbers of students who completed Freshman Seminar Classes and then look at their first term enrollment numbers compared to their third term enrollment numbers to determine how many of them persisted. Then I would divide the number of students remaining after the third term by the number of students enrolled in the first term to find the rate of retention.
