Using the required readings and materials for each lesson, write a Historical Analysis Essay. What are the most important lessons or observations you observed? What should we take away from the lesson? Why? You need to go through all of the materials in each lesson (taking notes) and apply significance and meaning to it, make connections. Why is it important? Why should we know this? That is what an analysis does. It is not just a summary.
I am interested in your thoughts and ideas about this material. I want you to think about what you are thinking about while you are reading and viewing these materials. You are bringing something to this historical discussion based on your own understanding of Western Civilization so far. So where do these readings and materials fit into your understanding of Western Civilization? Does it challenge what you thought you already knew? Is this the first time you are encountering this material?
Your Historical Analysis Essay is to be a formal essay that you will compose, edit and proofread then copy and post into the blackboard discussion board. I would advise against composing your Historical Analysis in the discussion board.
Your Historical Analysis Essay must be a minimum of 250 words. This is a formal writing assignment. Spelling, grammar and citations matter. Proofread carefully.
Each Historical Analysis essay will be 5 paragraphs. Please include in your Historical Analysis Essay each of the following paragraphs:
1st Paragraph – Introduction. After reading and going through all of the required materials, what themes, observations and connections have you made? You need to take notes as you go through the materials because you will have to comment on them specifically. You are introducing your observations or theme. Therefore, your Introduction must have a Thesis statement. What is it that you intend to prove or demonstrate through your analysis of the required materials?
2nd, 3rd and 4th Paragraphs will each analyze one specific reading or video (not the Crash Course videos) from the required materials in each lesson that supports your introduction. Each paragraph should be labeled with the reading or video you are commenting on at the end. The textbook has many sections to comment on so be specific with which section you are discussing. Merely indicating a chapter as a whole, for example Ch 3, is not specific enough. One of your required readings must be the textbook (Cole). The other two must come from the additional readings or videos. You may only use the textbook for one of your sources to analyze. When commenting on material from the textbook include the title of the specific section of the textbook after each paragraph. To summarize, paragraph 2, 3 and 4 are the evidence you are using to support your Thesis Statement.
5th Paragraph – Conclusion. This is where you will wrap up your Historical Analysis Essay. You do not want to just rephrase your introduction but comment on what you have learned or observed.
Word Requirement: 50 words per paragraph, 250 words total. This is a minimum word count. Feel free to go over.
***You can use the Crash Course videos in your commentary and analysis but they will not count as one of the three required readings or videos. Please include the other readings or videos for your Personal Reflection.
