Write a formal and polished five-page paper that critically reviews the text you selected. You should include a brief (usually a short paragraph) summary of the text; typically, this will follow your introduction which would include an even more brief (1-2 sentences) summation of the narrative.

The bulk of your paper should identify and engage with central themes or tropes in the text and analyze it using techniques and theories we have covered in class (e.g. Stuart Halls discussion of signs/symbols, Mary Pratts analysis of colonial travelogues, Orientalism, etc.). You should also situate the text amongst other writings on Africa or African nature and analyze its significance, particularly in terms of its construction and potential for disseminating images or stereotypes of Africa.

The paper must be cited according to Chicago style guidelines. You should also include a bibliography that lists both the works you cite in your paper as well as those you do not but which you found helpful when analyzing the text. 12 point Times New Roman Font. No need for a cover page.
