An annotated bibliography includes two parts:
a standard bibliography entry for each source (use MLA format), and
a short annotation for each source that gives readers an idea of the contents and how that information applies to the research topic.
For each of the 5 sources for your research paper write a one-paragraph annotation of at least 150 words in which you:
Give a one-sentence summary of the contents of the article/book.
Tell which section of your argument this information applies to (Problem, Solution, Counterargument, Response) and the value this information has for your argument.
Tell why you consider this source credible.
Comment on any weaknesses in the credibility of this source.
Comment on any possible biases in, or limits to, the information.
(each of these bullets could be more than one sentence long)
EXAMPLE ENTRY (MLA format, also note the indentation of the left margin):
Starnes, Bobby Ann. These Kids Today, Phi Delta Kappan. June 2009: 770-771.
On the general topic of corporal punishment Starnes reflects on a phrase she heard in her early years of teaching, These kids today. Most of the time the line finished with a negative comparison to previous generations of students. Starnes is more optimistic in her outlook of her current students as every bit as talented and able to do schoolwork as their predecessors. Often the complainers would add that a good spanking would stop much of the bad behavior, but Starnes does not agree. She makes the point that a change in the teachers outlooks on student potential is needed instead. This article is useful in an argument on the use of corporal punishment in school because it gives the position that spanking would be beneficial, and then gives a response to this position with an alternative to that form of discipline. The writer speaks from a career-worth of experience to draw on, which includes a range of strategies for dealing with bad student behavior. Weaknesses in the article are its limitation to only the experiences of the writer and its omission of research data.
(As an example, this entry is 185 words. You do not need to give a word count.)
