Mass Communication is, at best, at least in the opinion of this instructor, “soft science.” That being said, there have been any number of scholars over the years working to build an academic body of knowledge pertaining to the field/industry.
Some of the first were Canadian author and educator Marshall McLuhan (who coined the phrase, “The medium is the message”) and political scientist Harold D. Lasswell (who designed a model to describe the process of communication that is still in use today, asking “Who said what to whom with what effect”.)
Your assignment is to choose which of these scholars you believe has more to say in helping us to understand the impact of the media upon our society, culture and politics.
