Write a Literary Analysis over Sweat, by Zora Neale Hurston.

Literary Analysis over short story Sweat, by Zora Neale Hurston

This paper will be 1000 word minimum, and you will be selecting two literary elements with which to analyze from the handout. This is called Formalist Criticism, and it is the technical aspect of an analysis. It deals with elements like Theme and Symbolism. You will also select one other critical theory–either Historical, Cultural, or Gender Studies to analyze with. Think of these as a lens that you are viewing the story through. You will get two sources of professional criticism to back up your thesis, and these will come from the library database category Literature Criticism and Interpretation and/or books. Absolutely NO WEBSITES. You will also have a few quotes from the story itself. I will send the citations from the stories to put on your Works Cited page.

An analysis is NOT a summary; it is an argumentative-type paper in which your thesis is a claim that your interpretation of the story is valid. So your thesis cannot simply be a statement of fact. It is not that you are coming up with something that is completely original. In fact, you will have to get two sources of criticism that back up your thesis. It is just that someone else may see the story in a different light.

No I or you. No “I think that” or “In my opinion” no “you” or “your”–just write like a professional critic.

Your introductory paragraph must contain the author’s name, the title of the story in quotation marks, and a brief synopsis of the story. In addition, you must mention or allude to the two elements and the other critical theory you are using, and a clear thesis. When referring to the story, use present tense. For example, you want to write, “The older waiter feels…” rather than “The older waiter felt…”
