The paper topic is iconoclasm. I have to compare an instance of iconoclasm in Ancient Egypt to one in the modern worlds. The title of the paper is “Iconoclasm as a Tool to Rewrite History”, and the two that I chose are Iconoclasm and the Queens of Egypt (focusing on Nefertiti and Hatshepsut), and Iconoclasm in the UK with the toppling of Edward Colston’s statue (he was a slave trader). The idea is to compare how iconoclasm can be used as a powerful tool to rewrite history, or determine what will be remembered or not. This are the instructions the professor gave us: Students will choose a monument of more recent times that has become controversial or been removed/destroyed 1) to present in class and 2) write a paper comparing contemporary circumstances to the ancient world. Students will analyze a monument in our own time that no longer reflects current societal values or power relationships.
