Below is the prompt, please read carefully: Write a 7-10, double-spaced paper on one of the following topics:The authors we have covered in the second part of the course explicitly disagree with ancient and medieval philosophers on several issue. Choose at least three of the authors (Machiavelli, Luther, Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau), explain their disagreement with ancient philosophy, and the implications on this agreement on their philosophy. You should make clear now only what their views are, but also how they arrive and justify their views. Please take note: Authors that I am choosing are Machiavelli, Hobbes and Rousseau. The essay assignment asks us to consult Machiavelli’s ‘The Prince’, Hobbes’s ‘Leviathan’, and Rousseau’s ‘Social Contract’. Ancient philosophy here is mainly Plato and Aristotle’s philosophy. The texts covered during the course for the two are “Republic” and “Politics”. Please use the 5 texts, which I attached below as pdf file while writing the essay. This is the structure of the essay that I wanted to write: Introduction: What ancient philosophy is generally. What does Plato and Aristotle state and how it is represented as ancient philosophy (regarding ‘Republic’ and ‘Politics’) First: shortly mention Machiavelli’s agreement with ancient philosophy and demonstrate how he disagrees with ancient philosophy mostly. (regarding ‘The Prince’) Second: shortly mention Hobbes’s agreement with ancient philosophy and demonstrate how he disagrees with ancient philosophy mostly.(regarding ‘Leviathan’) (An example of the statement would be like: Ancient philosophy states that a utopian state is ideal in which few takes charge of justice while Hobbes states that a settled, practical state is ideal in which law comes into place to take peace) Third: shortly mention Rousseau’s agreement with ancient philosophy and demonstrate how he disagrees with ancient philosophy mostly.(regarding ‘Social contract) Fourth: Common disagreements which Machiavelli, Hobbes and Rousseau share in regards to ancient philosophy. Fifth: How each Machiavelli, Hobbes, and Rousseau differ in their disagreements with ancient philosophy Last: Implications of the three philosophers’ disagreements with ancient philosophy in the modern context Please be sure to ‘make clear now only what their views are, but also how they arrive and justify their views.’ this means the essay should not be simply explaining philsophers’ viewpoints, but should guide the readers along how they reach their beliefs. Also, the essay does not have to use quotes much from the book. However, the content of the essay should not shift away from 5 books (Republic, Politics, The prince, Leviathan, and Social contract)
