Rationale
This module will support students to develop their knowledge and understanding of a range of international curricular and theory linked to the care and education of children. Teaching approaches will consist of taught sessions in which students will have an opportunity to reflect and discuss their own understanding of the different international perspectives and how these link to the way in which they care or educate the children they work with and how this may influence their practice. It will include a range of online activities for students to consolidate their learning.

Critical examination of the values implicit in constructions of childhood.
Critical evaluation of the manifestation of respective values in policies, legislation and practice relating to early childhood pedagogies and institutions.
Develop questioning and critical attitudes enabling clear reasoning in relation to multiple perspectives on early childhood.

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

Task
You will complete an essay of 4000 words.
The assessment for the essay makes up 100% of total mark for module.

Within the essay you need to discuss different national and international perspectives in relation to constructions of childhood and evidence of societal influences in relation to early years practice. Examine the historic constructions of childhood You need to consider the holistic development of the child.
You should also examine the impact of international policy, including the UNCRC. Consider the roles of parents in different cultures and the sociology/history of childhood. You must explore key theorists impacting on international perspectives and highlight the pedagogical frameworks and the ecology of the child from an international perspective.
Finally you need to consider the pedagogical frameworks of approaches and the historical development of learning and development, from an international perspective. Provide links to the evidence of the role of play and learning the international perspective of this. What can be learnt from the different pedagogical practices and are there ideas that you can take from these approaches to change current practice?

I would like the essay to focus particularly on comparing the UK approach to education and the Scandinavian approach to education. It needs to include how both approaches impact on education, care, development etc. The essay needs to include theorists (list above). The essay needs to include a refection on what could be implemented in UK settings taken from Scandinavian approaches. Please include additional approached to education to support the essay but in less depth than the UK and Scandinavian approach.
