Individualism may be hard to pin down, but in contemporary societies, variants of individualism have emerged as influential ideas and practices that signify modernization. Documenting modernity in the early 20th century, Sociological theorists argued that all definitions and expressions of individualism are influenced by two different traditions of thought, allowing us to categorise and explain individualism in its many forms. Examine and explain this statement, showing how this analysis can help to explain two examples of individualism examined in this course with clear contemporary relevance. (3000 words) 1)All references must be drawn from the reading list and the theoretical paradigms examined in the course this semester. 2)The essay requires you to build a coherent answer to the question. This will take the form of a carefully constructed, reasoned argument. Your argument should be based on your analysis of the concepts and examples you select to make your case. 3)Again, the essay is analytical in nature, asking you to define and explain the concepts and theoretical ideas introduced in this course which you believe are relevant in answering the question. 4)To explain the theoretical ideas you are using, you should: Define each concept- by using direct (short) citations from relevant sources properly cited eg ( Simmel, 1971: 67)You then must explain each concept in your own words (this is called paraphrasing ) to show that you understand the concept in question eg Here, Simmel suggests that although we are separate individuals, we still have the capacity to relate to others.5) Treat your chosen examples (ie the two course topics) in the same way, ie as evidence that supports your case and shows how well you understand the relevant ideas.
