As a requirement for this course, students are to submit a 5-7 page paper on a topic of their choosing. Papers must explore a historical question and display clear understandings of historical scholarship and methodology. Papers must be double spaced. Topics must be related to the class and cannot
Successful papers will have a clear thesis, solid evidence backing up their thesis, and a clear conclusion.
Generally speaking, arguments usually look like this:
How did the Boxer Rebellion impact colonial politics?
How did the industrial revolution change ______?
How was _______ understood in the contexts of ________?
Arguments should be much more specific than above, but these should give you a good . As a reminder, these arguments are not acceptable as a thesis. The answer to the question you pose is your thesis.
I strongly, strongly recommend against students choosing a topic that involves exploring how ____ still impacts us today. It is not that these topics arent worthwhile, it is just that this topic is near impossible to pull off in a 5-7 page paper, and it usually leads to a low grade. Students who go this route tend to compare random parts of the world that dont really have any connection (like Ancient Greece and the United States). Such an ambitious topic needs a
Citations and Sources
Your paper must have proper citations and contain relevant quotations. Students can use any source as long as it is academic. If you find something on the internet, it must be approved by me before you can use it. All citations must be in Chicago Style.
