Below are the instructions for the essay assigned in my American Literature course. I selected Kate Chopin’s Novel “The Awakening”, published in 1899, and can be found free online in pdf form. Entire paper length should be 1000 words or more and cohesive.
1. Identify the title and author of the novel and remember that the titles of novels are enclosed in italics. Write a 100 word summary of main events of novel in chronological order. Do not go into detail or analyze in the summary; tell the first thing that happened, the second thing that happened, etc.
2. One, two or three sentences explaining author’s purpose in telling the novel–his main point or main idea. This is a general statement about people, society, human nature, relationships that is derived from specific events in the novel.
3. Analyze main character only by giving quotes and paraphrases that support central idea. Only one main character in a novel. 150 words
4. Discuss conflict by stating main conflict in terms of two specific opposing forces in main character.. how is conflict resolved? How is conflict important in novel? 150 words
5. Identify setting-time and place on novel- and how it affects story. 150 words.
6. In two separate paragraphs of 150 words each, discuss two different literary (language) devices and how each affects novel. Give quotes of literary device. Each paragraph 150 words. Examples of literary devices to discuss: symbols, imagery, metaphors, allusions, irony, dialect, patterns.
