Write a paper research on “The Western Women’s Harem.”

Mernissi, in “Size 6: The Western Women’s Harem” notes a similarity between the covering of women in some Muslim cultures and the hiding of women behind sexualization, make-up, and impossible standards of attractiveness both act as a way to impose “invisibility” on women. Note: this idea has a great deal of evidence to support it. Consider, for instance, that women found in magazine and billboard advertisements don’t actually exist, they are usually a photoshopped compilation of 5-10 different women, or severely altered as in this video

Is the connection Mernissi makes a metaphor? What other examples and connections can you make through metaphor that demonstrates the way women are made “invisible” by society?
