Write a 2-3 page essay that responds to the following thematic essay topic using 3 art/design examples from class (1 of which must come from the first half of the semester/Weeks 1-7 and 2 of which must come from the second half of our semester/Weeks 9-13):
Throughout the class, we have examined the ways in which art, design, and visual culture diversely represent/critique/ engage/intervene into wider socio-political issues. Write an essay that explores how 3 examples discussed in class (1 from the first half of the semester/Weeks 1-7 & 2 from the second half of the semester/Weeks 9-13) relate to a broader socio-political issue.
Examples of socio-political issues that you may wish to discuss include (but are not limited to): competing ideologies (e.g., communist vs. capitalist, democratic vs. socialist); cross-cultural relations (e.g., African American-Chinese exchanges, cultural appropriation); totalizing vs. critical historical narratives (e.g., nationalist posturing; socialist realism vs. anti-heroic images; aestheticization of past struggles); oppression and resistance of marginalized communities (e.g., Black, Latinx, Asian, LGTBQ).
Clearly define the socio-political issue in your introduction and write a thesis linking your 3 examples. Fully identify the examples (artist/architect/director/designers full name, title, and date created) and critically analyze their diverging approaches to the socio-political issue. Your essay should include a brief introduction with thesis statement, full identification and analysis of 3 artworks/design objects/examples of visual culture discussed in class lectures and/or readings (see Key Slides/Midterm Exam Review/course readings for potential examples) that support your thesis, and a brief summarizing conclusion.
