Essay (1000 words) A scientist placed 100 five year olds on an uninhabited but fertile island, half boys, half girls. He provided the minimum requirements to keep them alive. The children receive no further language, education, culture etc., on the island. He slowly began to feed them less and less until he gave them nothing at all. After five years what has changed? For the assessment (1) assume the island is fertile and there are animals and birds but no large carnivores/predators e.g. lions, (2) the children have access to water, fruit and vegetables etc., – that are found on the island, nothing is cooked, until they can forage for themselves, (3) there are no genetic disorders beyond what we would find in the general population (this is not an emphasis), (4) they never see or interact with the scientist in any way, (5) before they arrived on the island they were brought up just like you and me in typical families and they all share a common language. I am adding a note to this last sentence as a few people have asked if they all speak English (it is something I have repeated in class) “some will have an additional language as they are just like the people in your class and from all over the world and different cultures/family structures.” What I mean by at the individual level are things like prosociality, imitation etc., as these are capacities or mechanisms in the individual though obviously need at least two people for them to be expressed. Group processes like cohesion and division are much more obvious I guess. Yes you are expected to talk about only one at the individual or group level however you might for example talk about prosociality, language or whatever leading to group formation but the focus would be the function of the group. Please note this is a psychology essay based on evidence. There are competing, complimentary and conflicting theories and studies in psychology that can be used in support of your argument. It is not a rhetorical, philosophical or anthropological piece – it is all about the balance of the evidence that lead to likely outcomes. You should focus on one topic, for example, at the group level or at the individual level (i.e. the mechanisms that we all have as individuals). Essays that have done well in the past have looked at language development, group cohesion, group division, reciprocity, tool use and innovation etc. and other topics from the lectures and reading materials, Essays that have done poorly, mainly because there is little good psychological literature, are topics like paranormal beliefs, religion, sexual orientation etc.,
