Pastoral support and mentoring

Project description
Title: Critically evaluate one aspect of pastoral care or mentoring in an educational context

Learning Outcomes:
1.Critically evaluate specific pastoral needs and support strategies for meeting those needs in an educational context.
2.Appreciate the significance of, and justify with critical awareness the need for pastoral support for effective learning.

Introduction
Use the wording of the title and LOs to explain what you are going to do in the assignment. Aim to justify your choice.
Briefly identify the pastoral needs you are going to analyse and specify the type of setting
Identify which pastoral strategies you are going to critically evaluate
Optional summary thesis statement which very succinctly summarises the key argument/finding of your paper; for example: Based upon the findings of this study into.. this paper will argue that [her name the type of pastoral support that is the focus of your study] is needed for effective learning [LO2].

Context in this section you use the research from your literature review.
Define pastoral care/mentoring
Explain why this has become important nationally for example in relation to ECM
Discuss the link between meeting pastoral needs and improving learning. (Here you can use theorists such as Maslow or Goleman. You can use the research from your literature review – see pastoral care in education journal articles) to highlight any areas of debate.
Linking to the above if possible identify your key topic for discussion and justify your choice why is this an important topic?
Local context: give brief details of your educational setting in relation to the pastoral care and your topic see mission statement, Ofsted report relevant to pastoral care etc

ANALYSIS: Here you discuss the pastoral needs you have briefly outlined above in greater detail = (the problem section of your assignment)
In this section you will identify and discuss the pastoral needs related to your topic area.
Support with evidence whenever possible eg present a case study. You are not expected to undertake a formal research project but evidence you obtain from the setting can include records/interviews/observations [sample evidence can be referenced as an appendix]. This evidence can be given in the third person. it was reported; it has been observed it was stated or you can use the personal pronoun I. In my professional practice.
Aim to make links between example from practice within educational setting and
relevant theory where possible.

ANALYSIS: Pastoral Strategies (= the solution section of your assignment)
Here you will identify and discuss relevant pastoral strategies to meet the pastoral needs identified above. Again evidence will come from the setting: relevant documentation, observations, interviews etc.
Again, link to relevant good guidance ie national policy and theory whenever possible.

EVALUATION
In this section give a detailed evaluation of the strategies that you have discussed.
Compare and contrast with good practice how far do the strategies meet the pastoral needs that you have identified.
What are the advantages of using these strategies/what are the disadvantages?
You can acknowledge- here any limitations of your study (for example, your findings will be based upon the experience of one setting only).
Discuss the impact upon learning of using these strategies? {remember LO2] what contribution to they make to effective learning?
Her you might be able to make a statement based upon your findings – justifying/stating that pastoral care/ specific strategies improve learning in your setting [LO2]. If this is not the case discuss why not and the implications of this.

Conclusion
Here you will summarise your key finding – does strategy X meet the pastoral needs Y?
You will reflect upon the importance of pastoral care in improving learning and developing the whole child making reference to any debates you identified in your context section what contribution to this wider debate does the findings from your setting make.
What recommendations will make re: future pastoral care and your setting. How could the strategies you have discussed be improved?
Next Steps? What is the impact going to be on your practice or future CPD of undertaking this study what will you do differently?

Notes

1.References for the Resource Books you are given will be provided at the end of term – posted up on Blackboard.

2.You will be expected to provide a bibliography for your assignment. This includes all the sources that have informed your thinking and those you have directly cited in your assignment. You are strongly advised to record your references as you research your topic. The only way to learn Harvard referencing is to practise.

3.An appendix can also be added with selected evidence. This can be numbered by hand and will be referenced as (see appendix: page no). Evidence could include an interview schedule (transcripts are not required).
