Upon studying science in school, I was always compelled to study the biological functions within the human body, in particular, the eye. In my opinion, ocular health is a vital, but an overlooked, aspect of general wellbeing. As I desire to help others, I believe that if I have any opportunity in preventing blindness, I should pursue it.
One crucial stepping stone in this is to gain knowledge in the pathology of the eye and measures in correcting it. This passion for learning sparked my application and pursuit of working at Specsavers. This enthralling experience, which I am currently still reaping the benefits of, exposes me to the retail and dispensing elements; for example, by carrying daily duties such as assisting patients with selecting frames and contact lenses, ordering customised frames for individuals and getting to know the unique pairs of glasses at Specsavers. Furthermore, my work here and training for the position has heightened my understanding of the biology of the eye which enables me to conduct pre-screening on patients, building my experience and knowledge into the field as a whole.
Additionally, my two week placement at Vision Express involved observing optometrists carrying out consultations, aiding the running of the reception and noting sales techniques demonstrated by dispensers.Through this experience, I was able to emulate communication techniques used by dispensers when getting hands on experience with patients, learning the relevant skills in consultation, testing and assessment of individual needs. This, in combination with my experience at Specsavers, has not only exposed me to the fast-paced retail environment and the seriousness of testing eyes but further persuaded me to study in this field, in hopes to reach an end goal of becoming an optometrist.
Also, in these experiences, I was able to develop my current skill-set to resemble that of an optometrist or dispenser. For example, the Duke of Edinburgh and my volunteering at Cancer Research established many communication and teamwork skills. Through these very different environments, I gained a deeper understanding of qualities such as empathy and communication with people as well as the value of trusting team members and working together to achieve a common goal.
Another event that I take pride in being a part of, was helping raise awareness for the Grenfell Tower Fire; I took on the duty of distributing the minimal resources to those involved and providing linguistic support to non-English speaking evacuees. I was able to develop my listening skills, whilst communicating with residents of different backgrounds and ethnicities with various levels of fluency. By working closely with the public and working hard to distribute resources, I believe I demonstrate resilience and good communications, skills essential to working with eyes.
Through taking Biology and Chemistry as two of my A Levels, I have been captivated by the interesting processes involved within science. Through studying science, I feel as though my fascination for the eye has deepened. I was constantly encouraged to look beyond the curriculum by reading _____ and watching ____, which has only heightened my passions for studying this course.
Fulfilling an end career in Optometry will be challenging and rewarding but I hope to gain a full understanding of the field and eventually work to prevent blindness first-hand, as I am destined to do.
