Working Women

Lois Jensen, like many people who make history, started out as someone minding her own business. She sought a job at a mining company because it paid a lot better than the service jobs that most working-class women held. She knew the job would be physically grueling and potentially dangerous. What she discovered was that the greatest danger came from her male co-workers, whose unmitigated mistreatment of the women on the job, an obscene record that was essentially condoned by the company’s top brass, led to the first ever class action sexual harassment case heard by a federal court in 1998. Jensen eventually won her case, and a lot of money to go with it. But as is often the case in these types of lawsuits, the prerequisite for any chance of victory is a lifetime’s worth of mental and physical scars. These benefits come with a hefty price tag. So how does one adapt a tale of tragedy and triumph, frustration and fortune, into a 2-hour movie?

It’s already been done via the film NORTH COUNTRY, starring Charlize Theron.

1. But before you watch the movie, please listen to the interview with Lois Jensen and write how you think a movie adaptation would play out in three acts. You only need 1-2 sentences to describe each act.

2. Then rent and watch NORTH COUNTRY and compare the differences between Lois Jensen’s story and the creative license taken by director Nikki Caro and company.

3. Assess the level of historical truth of the film despite the amount of historical inaccuracies.
