What came to mind when thinking about what you were passionate about/what experiences you’ve had?

For this assignment, I want you to begin by reflecting on what you care about. Maybe start with a patient experience you’ve had or a family member has had. Or think about the causes you care about – or maybe a problem you care about.

Then, think about a type of intervention (or diagnostic/prognostic factor) that could help with this patient/population/problem.

Then, what could you compare this to? For example, if you are considering patients with PTSD as the patient population – and talk therapy as the intervention – you might choose support groups as a comparator. Not every question will have this element – but for the purpose of this exercise, I want you to think of a comparator. You can also think of this part as being the “standard” of care – versus your intervention.

Last, what outcomes are you interested in? Are you interested in reducing pain? Weight change? Number of times someone goes to the gym per week? For the PTSD example, the outcomes could be nightmares/night terrors – or maybe days depressed in a one week period.

After thinking through all of these elements, please post in the discussion board:

What came to mind when thinking about what you were passionate about/what experiences you’ve had? (1 pt)
What did you decide on as your final patient/population/problem (your “P”)? (1 pt)
What did you decide on as your intervention or diagnostic/prognostic factor (your “I”)? (1 pt)
What did you decide on as your comparison/control (your “C”)? (1 pt)
What did you decide on as your outcome(s) (your “O”)? (1 pt)
Then, write your PICO in a “question” format. (1 pt)
Finally, perform a quick search using your question (Google Scholar is fine for this exercise). In a few sentences, write about: did the search work? (1 pt), how many articles came up? (1 pt), did the articles seem relevant (by a quick scan of the titles)? (1 pt), what was the one title you felt was most relevant (1 pt), do you feel like you need to alter your question to make it more precise – or if you felt like it was precise enough, what do you feel like worked well? (1 pt).
