1. Assignment Goals:
Students will be introduced to select figures in the history of the Church and their interpretation of selected scriptures.
Students will assess the hermeneutical patterns of the Church and their contribution to biblical interpretation.
2. Assignment Instructions:
Fully read 3 pdfs of any figure of your choice.
Write a 5-paragraph response to the selected readings.
Refrain from personal judgments (I agree; I disagree; etc.). A goal is to observe how Bible interpretation was modeled, not assessing its value.
Answer the following prompts: (1) What readings did you choose? (2) Describe the hermeneutical patterns of the figure using technical language (i.e., figural, allegorical, anagogical, literal, etc.) and provide examples; and (3) In your current assessment, is this a correct reading of the passage? Why or why not?
