Inequalities affecting minority ethnic groups have come under increasing scrutiny as a result of the impact of COVID-19. But these inequalities have been having an impact on social mobility for many years; and the outcomes seen across health, income, education and many other major areas of life. Inequalities can also differ significantly across gender, age, socio-economic disadvantage and for specific ethnic groups, with some groups seeing major improvements, while others fall further behind. This workshop will set out these major patterns of outcomes, based on the three year SPDO programme funded by the Nuffield Foundation which maps the social policies, investments, and outcomes under the Conservative governments, May 2015 to pre-pandemic 2020. The programme takes an integrated view across all the main areas of social policy. It also drills into differential outcomes by specific groups and policy areas. We want to engage with experts and activists, to explore these issues for about 90 minutes over Zoom, and your expertise would be very valuable as part of this discussion. The workshop aims to draw on the ideas and knowledge of the participants, around the questions of: How were specific inequalities growing or reducing before COVID?What might lie behind low social mobility of Black Caribbean men and women?Does equalities legislation need to be strengthened through targets embedded in legislation?
