Male Struggle for Identity in Selected Plays of Sam Shepard

The study is divided into four chapters. Chapter One is an introduction for Male Struggle for Identity in Selected Plays of Sam Shepard. Chapter Two will analyse Buried Child. Chapter Three will focus on States of Shock (1998). Chapter Four will deal with Eyes for Consuela (2002). For now, I want just chapter two which will analyze Buried Child to portray how the characters of this play are grappling with their identities. Set in a farmhouse in Illinois, it depicts the breakdown of an American nuclear family and the failure of the American Dream. It portrays how the legacy of the father is inherited by the son and, later, by the grandson. The search for this inheritance is, in fact, a failed attempt to develop a sense of identity and belonging.
