Aims:
• To apply modern Web-based techniques for management of information systems used in the design and manufacturing processes;
• To apply the principles of computer networking and intercommunication and protocols for inter-process communication in loosely and tightly coupled systems;
• To design and analyse information systems within the context of a business as a whole.
Learning outcomes:
1. Critically analyse and evaluate the requirements for information integration for an engineering system and effectively apply advanced information and communication technologies.
2. Critically analyse information system requirements by taking account of commercial and industrial constraints and create an implementation strategy for effective information processing and management.
3. Generate an innovative design of Web-based information systems to fulfil new needs for managing manufacturing processes.
Coursework specification:
In the age of information explosion, one needs to deal with a huge amount of data and information. For example, you create and store a lot of files in your personal/office computer every day, and these files may not be easily found later on because they are not organised in a particular way that enables effective personal information management. Although there are some solutions such as Dropbox and Google Drive which support files storage and sharing, again, though, little work has been done to study how advanced IT solutions can be developed to help users to organise, store, and more importantly easily find the information they need.
You are a professional in an IT consultancy specialising IT solutions for end users across multiple platforms (e.g. computers, mobile devices). You have been recently tasked with producing a plan to develop a prototype personal information and knowledge system which can help your users to effectively manage information and knowledge in their daily life. When you finish this project, you need to produce a report as well as a prototype system so that the senior management of your company can make decision on whether this system deserves more investment. Specifically, your work includes the following tasks:
1. Undertake research of existing personal information and knowledge management systems to find out the main vendors, solutions and functionalities of these systems;
2. Analyse the information usage of your system through a survey and identify the main requirements of the system you are going to develop;
3. Develop a method which can help your user to effective manage personal information and knowledge;
4. Produce an innovative design of a prototype system that is based on the service oriented architecture and runs across multiple platforms;
5. Develop a prototype system which will be used to demonstrate your ideas;
6. Write a report describing your research, analysis, design and development.
Submission requirements and marking criteria:
The report will preferably start with an executive summary prior to the main body of the report and contain as appendices your summaries of charts and diagrams which are relevant to your design and development work. Please use the Harvard APA 6th edition as your referencing.
Marks are awarded for clearly recorded and justified decisions.
Large quantities of unused internet download will be penalized.
The specific marking criteria are shown in Table 1 and the marking scheme is as follows:
Research of existing systems (15%)
Identification of requirements and design of a method (25%)
Design of a prototype system (30%)
Development of the prototype system (20%)
Presentation, structure, and format of the report (10%)
